Why Study Hindi?

Some students study Hindi to be able to enjoy some of the 700-900 Hindi films produced each year, while others study Hindi to be able to conduct original research in India. Still others are keen to be able to talk with their relatives in India. No matter their reasons for enrolling or their course of study, students, as citizens of a rapidly globalizing world, will undoubtedly benefit by studying Hindi.

There is currently no undergraduate major in Hindi at Michigan State University. But taking coursework in Hindi may fruitfully enhance other programs of study, such as those in religion, anthropology, history, art history, business, and international relations. Moreover, students may apply coursework in Hindi towards the major in Global and Area Studies (GLAS) with an Asian Studies Concentration through the College of Social Science. For the GLAS major, two years of the study of an Asian language is required.

Alternately, students may apply coursework in Hindi towards the Specialization in Asian Studies through the Asian Studies Center. For the Specialization in Asian Studies, one to two years of the study of an Asian language is required.
