German Studies: Admission

Application

  1. Submitting an Application for Admission to Graduate Study and official transcripts of previous academic work to the Graduate School, Office of Admissions and Scholarships (www.msu.edu/user/gradschl/apply.htm )
  2. Additional : the applicant should submit the following directly to the Director of Graduate Studies:
  1. A transcript of all academic work on the collegiate level
  2. Three letters of recommendation
  3. The results of the Graduate Record Examination
  4. A letter of approximately 500 words containing the applicant's biography and reasons for pursuing graduate study.
  5. A portfolio of the applicant's representative work in German.
  6. Applicants to the Ph.D. Program Only -- Submit M.A. thesis or an equivalent major paper in German.

Master's Program

To be admitted to the Master of Arts program in German with regular status, applicants must have completed:

  • completed a bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in a recognized educational institution, or its equivalent,
  • at least three years of college-level language, literature, and culture coursework taught in German
  • completed a minimum of 24-30 semester credits in German beyond second-year courses. This coursework should include significant experience with the reading and analysis of German texts
  • passed the Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung or its equivalent (can be taken at MSU)
  • 3.0. average in their junior and senior years of the undergraduate program
  • overseas experience in German-speaking countries is highly desirable

If an applicant appears to have an inadequate background in one or more areas, admission to the program is granted provisionally with the department requiring additional coursework at MSU that does not count toward the degree.

Doctoral Program

Applicants for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree program are expected to have completed high quality graduate work in German prior to admission and have a GPA of at least 3.25 in this coursework. This graduate work should approximate the requirements for the M.A. in German at MSU, including evidence of course work in linguistics, pedagogy, and cultural and literary studies. To be admitted to the program on regular status, an applicant must have a master's degree in German or 30 credits of approved course work that includes GRM/CAL 881, GRM 810, and GRM 820 or their equivalents. If an applicant appears to have an inadequate background in one or more areas, admission to the program is granted provisionally with the department requiring additional course work at MSU that will not count toward the degree.
