Teaching Assistantships

Application Form for Teaching Assistantships

Teaching Assistantships are available to qualified students either within the German Section, in the MSU Freshman Writing Program, or in the Center for Integrative Studies in Arts and Humanities (CISAH).


Research Assistantships

Some Research Assistantships are available to qualified students. These are normally associated with individual faculty members or linked to specific projects in some centers. Further information about the centers: Center for International Business Education Research (CIBER), the Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR), or the Language Learning Center.

The German Studies Graduate Program offers two competitive Max Kade Research Assistantships, one RAship associated with the Global Literary and Cultural Studies Research Cluster GlCS and one highly competitive 5 year support package (a combination of RAship, TAship, fellowship, and study abroad in Jena).


Fellowships

The College of Arts and Letters also sponsors a limited number of special three-year fellowship/assistantships awarded to outstanding Ph.D. applicants on a competitive basis. The award consists of an outright fellowship for the first year of enrollment, and a teaching or research assistantship for the second and third years. The Graduate School offers a special highly competitive recruitment fellowship, the University Distinguished Fellowship, under which the student receives 4 years of support. The Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Study. Nearly all students in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences who apply to the doctoral programs are eligible for Mellon Fellowships which provide a first-year stipend of $17,500 and tuition. For more information: http://www.woodrow.org/mellon Doctoral students at Michigan State University are eligible to apply for admission to the "Traveling Scholar Program," sponsored by the Big Ten Universities and University of Chicago through the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). The Michigan Intercollegiate Graduate Studies (MIGS) Program enables graduate students of Michigan institutions offering graduate degree programs to take advantage of unique educational opportunities at other Michigan institutions offering graduate degrees.


Travel Support

Students who present papers at academic conferences or who need to travel in conjunction with their research may apply for financial assistance. Generally speaking at least partial support is available for one trip per academic year. Additional support may be available for overseas travel.
