German Language Courses
The German undergraduate studies curriculum offers a sequence of up to four years of language courses, focusing on communication in German and emphasizing active use of the language in all classes. First and second year courses fulfill standard college language requirements.
If you have had German before, take the online placement test to enroll in the appropriate course. You may document your language proficiency by passing one of the two Goethe Institute exams given each year at MSU -the Zertifikat Deutsch and the Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung.
- GRM 101 - 102 Elementary German provides a firm foundation in German language and culture for communication.
- GRM 201 - 202 Second-Year German builds on the communicative skills of reading and writing while continuing to enhance speaking and listening skills.
- GRM 301 - 302 Third-Year German and
- GRM 311 - 312 Business German offer students a choice to develop their language skills, depending on their academic interests.
- GRM 325 Third-Year German: Oral Communication focuses exclusively on developing speaking proficiency.
- GRM 420 Advanced German is the final language course at the undergraduate level.
- GRM 460 Linguistic Analysis of Modern German offers students the opportunity to hone their linguistic skills in German while learning how to analyze the German language.
German Culture and Literature Courses
Starting at the third year level students have the opportunity to learn about Germany's place in the world through literature, film and contemporary and historical readings.
