Studying a foreign language is good for you! Studies have shown that it leads to cognitive and academic advantages. Students who speak more than one language perform better than their monolingual counterparts on achievement and other academic and cognitive tests. MSU language requirements may be met by studying a LCTL.
Knowing another language gives you a competitive edge! Because fewer people study LCTLs, having one on your resume will truly make you stand out. In addition, in this age of globalization, no matter what your career, it is likely there will be opportunities to utilize and benefit from your knowledge of a LCTL.
The U.S. government is facing a "language crisis" because it cannot find people who speak less commonly taught languages. Numerous government jobs are available to those who study a LCTL. The U.S. military also provides extra pay to people who are proficient in a foreign language.
Many scholarships and fellowships are available for studying a LCTL at your university or during a study abroad experience. For more information, see Scholarships.
Studying a LCTL leads to adventure! You may some day be able to visit or live and work in the country where the language is spoken, and many study abroad opportunities exist at MSU. For most people, one or more of your ancestors probably spoke a LCTL, and for heritage students, it is a wonderful way to connect with the language and culture of your parents and relatives.
