Students who complete the B.A. in Russian graduate from MSU with proficiency in the Russian language and a wide range of knowledge about Russia itself and major trends and themes in its development, including its history, politics, cinema, literature, and culture. All courses feature small classes using materials designed specifically for MSU students. All students are encouraged to spend time studying in Russia or a Russian-speaking country.
Active Student Community
Our program has an engaged community with a Russian club that offers students opportunities to undertake leadership roles
Small Class Sizes
Small classes lead to students working closely with faculty starting in Russian 101 all the way through 400-level classes
Hybrid courses that give students more flexibility in their schedule and materials designed specifically for their level and interests
The Russian major at MSU will provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the Russian language and an introduction to many facets of Russian culture, including literature, cinema, and popular culture. Many majors spend a summer or semester in Russia or Russian-speaking country.
This minor will provide students the opportunity to acquire a core of basic knowledge of Russia, Russian culture, and the Russian language. The minor is available as an elective to students who are enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs at Michigan State University other than the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Russian.
Study Abroad Program
Russian Language in Volgograd
This program is for students looking to travel to Russia and improve their language skills. It is offered annually in the summer and begins with several days in St. Petersburg and Moscow – two of Russia’s largest cities. Students will then travel to Volgograd, where they’ll attend classes and study intensive Russian for five weeks while living with host families.
